Project: Energy Efficient Retrofitting
This grant assists States and local governments in implementing strategies to reduce fossil fuel emissions and reduce total energy use. Activities eligible to receive funding include: conducting residential and commercial building energy audits; establishing financial incentive programs for energy efficiency improvements; grants to non-profits organizations to perform energy efficiency retrofits; developing/implementing programs to conserve energy used in transportation; developing and implementing building codes and inspections services to promote building energy efficiency; installing light emitting diodes (LEDs); and developing, implementing, and installing on or in any government building on-site renewable energy technology that generates electricity from renewable sources. This grant is administered by the U.S. Department of Energy.
How is San Francisco using this grant?
San Francisco is using this grant for three projects. The first project will provide loans to help San Francisco residents make their homes or businesses more energy efficient. The second project will retrofit a variety of non-profit, multi-family, and commercial buildings that currently have energy inefficient heating systems to reduce pollution and create cost savings. The final project will make energy improvement to the following community serving facilities:
- Mission Cultural Center
- SOMArts Center
- Southeast Health Center
- Ocean Park Health Center
- African American Arts & Culture Complex
- Ella Hill Hutch Center
How will these projects benefit San Francisco?
Jobs Created: Local workers will be hired for this work in cooperation with the Office of Economic and Workforce Development.
Environmental Benefits: These projects will reduce pollution as result of inefficient energy systems in local homes, businesses and community centers.
